The Productivity Question Nobody Is Asking

The Productivity Question Nobody Is Asking
Across dentistry, there is an ongoing drive to improve productivity, efficiency and patient experience. Practices are investing in digital scanners, software platforms, AI integrations and workflow automation tools at an unprecedented rate. The industry is embracing innovation, and rightly so. Technology has transformed the way many practices operate and has created opportunities to improve both clinical outcomes and operational performance.
What is interesting, however, is that while many practices are prepared to invest significant sums into technology designed to improve productivity, there is often far greater hesitation when it comes to investing in people.
When considering a new scanner or software package, the conversation usually centres around return on investment. Will it save time? Will it improve workflows? Will it create a better experience for patients? Will it ultimately make the practice more productive?
Yet when the conversation turns to staffing, the focus can quickly shift towards cost alone.
This raises an important question. If the objective is to create a more productive practice, why is investment in people so often viewed differently to investment in technology?
The reality is that no matter how advanced a practice becomes, dentistry remains a people business. Every piece of technology within a surgery still relies on a team of skilled professionals to maximise its value. A digital scanner may improve workflows, but it cannot reassure a nervous patient. AI may support administrative efficiency, but it cannot anticipate a clinician's next move during treatment. Software can streamline systems, but it cannot create the teamwork and communication required for a surgery to run at its best.
That responsibility sits with people.
Few people have a greater influence on the efficiency of a surgery than the dental nurse working alongside the clinician. An experienced dental nurse does far more than simply assist. They help appointments run smoothly, maintain high standards of infection control, support patient communication, anticipate the needs of the clinician and contribute to the overall flow of the day. Their impact is often most noticeable when they are absent.
Most clinicians will recognise the difference immediately. A well-supported surgery feels calmer, more organised and more productive. Appointments run more efficiently, patients receive a better experience and clinicians are able to focus their attention on delivering treatment rather than managing avoidable disruptions.
This is particularly relevant when discussing locum staffing.
There remains a perception in some areas of the profession that locum staff are simply there to fill a gap in the rota. In reality, the right locum dental nurse can offer considerably more than that. Many experienced locum nurses have worked across dozens, sometimes hundreds, of different practices throughout their careers. They have been exposed to a wide variety of systems, workflows, clinicians and practice environments. They are often highly adaptable, resilient and capable of integrating quickly into new teams.
At S4S Team, we see this every day. The practices that achieve the greatest value from locum support are rarely those that view the booking as a temporary solution to a staffing problem. Instead, they recognise the experience, professionalism and high standards that the individual brings with them. They see the locum not simply as cover, but as an extension of their team for the day.
When clinicians embrace that opportunity, the benefits can be significant. An experienced locum dental nurse can help maintain productivity during periods of absence, reduce pressure on permanent team members, support patient flow and ensure that standards remain consistently high. In many cases, they enable practices to continue operating efficiently at times when they may otherwise have been forced to reduce capacity or rearrange appointments.
Perhaps this is where the conversation around staffing needs to evolve.
Rather than asking, "How much does a locum nurse cost?", perhaps the better question is, "What value does a highly skilled locum nurse bring?"
The answer often extends far beyond simply filling a chair.
A productive clinician generates revenue. A productive surgery creates capacity. A productive team delivers a better patient experience. The right support helps make all of that possible.
Of course, technology will continue to play an increasingly important role in modern dentistry, and practices should continue to invest in innovation where it adds value. However, productivity is rarely achieved through technology alone. More often, it is the result of skilled people working together effectively, supported by the right systems and processes.
The most successful practices understand this balance. They recognise that investment in technology and investment in people are not competing priorities. They are complementary ones.
Because while technology may enhance productivity, it is people who ultimately deliver it.
And in a profession built on people, investing in quality, professionalism and high standards will always generate one of the strongest returns of all.
